Awareness of the Importance of the Ecological Pillar in the Sustainable Development of Future Communities

Engaging children in ecological-themed activities to inspire ecological responsibility and awareness among future generations.

The Local Challenge

According to the Airborne Particulate Pollution August 2023 Situation Analysis report, Romania ranks 45th globally in pollution-related deaths and 8th in Europe. In 2019, Romania saw 20,755 deaths related to pollution, primarily from air pollution. Environmental awareness is very low, with prevalent issues including lack of recycling and irresponsible waste disposal as well as reckless consumerism. Organising ecological-themed activities helps to raise awareness and promote better environmental practices in the community.

 The Initiative

This collaboration between the library and community development association is engaging children in ecological awareness activities – including video content and creative workshops, hands on tree-planting programmes, rubbish collection and an eco-innovation competition led by the library’s robotics club. Children are also being invited to curate an ecological exhibition. The project culminates with an educational trip, allowing children to witness the concepts and activities they have learned firsthand.

What’s Next?

This comprehensive approach ensures a deep understanding of ecological concepts through on-going activities and discussions, inspiring ecological responsibility and awareness among future generations. The projects long-term commitment includes ongoing discussions and engagement throughout the summer months, helping to maintain a sustained focus on ecological concerns and promoting a culture of lifelong environmental stewardship.
