Community Growing for Recovery

Tackling health inequalities, environmental concerns and cost-of-living challenges by creating a learning garden – empowering vulnerable residents to grow their own food.

The Local Challenge

Nearly two-thirds of Falkirk Library’s users fall into the most deprived fifth of Scotland’s population. Social isolation and mental health issues, worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis, have left many local residents hesitant to seek support, which has exacerbated loneliness and health inequalities. Creating community spaces where people can connect with nature, learn food growing skills and socialise is essential. These shared spaces can provide vital opportunities for healing, learning and building resilience in the face of economic and social challenges.

 The Initiative

Falkirk Library services and Falkirk’s Mental Health Association are working together to transform a disused plot of land into a vibrant learning community garden. Borrowable starter packs include growing guides, seeds, tools and gardening books, supplemented by workshops that empower vulnerable residents to grow their own food. A directory of local producers also helps to promote economic, health and environmental benefits, complemented by recipe cards and videos. The garden offers a safe, inclusive space for learning, resource-building and mental well-being to flourish – nurturing confidence and a sense of belonging among vulnerable local residents.

What’s Next?

Moving forward, the initiative plans to deepen community and producer engagement by distributing directories that promote the local food network, facilitated through libraries offering borrowable resource packs and workshops. This try before you buy approach fosters participation without financial pressure. Social media and filming will showcase participants journeys and project outcomes to boost community involvement. The overarching aim of the initiative is to improve community health and reduce carbon emissions by promoting healthy eating, home gardening and local produce. It will also help to expand the library’s role as a community hubs – promoting sustainability and resilience through innovative partnerships.
