Future Builders Lab: Empowering Young Minds through Creative Career Exploration

The Local Challenge

In Ruse and the surrounding region, children aged 7–12 with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds have few opportunities for creative, inclusive learning outside school. Many lack inspiring role models, exposure to digital tools, and spaces where they can connect with peers on equal terms. Without these opportunities, children often withdraw socially, struggle with self-confidence, and fail to imagine positive futures in education or work. Schools rarely have the resources to address diverse learning needs, and informal learning is scarce. The COVID-19 pandemic deepened these disparities, leaving vulnerable children even more excluded. These gaps make imaginative, inclusive programmes urgent.

The Initiative

The Future Builders Lab transforms Ruse’s Regional Library “Lyuben Karavelov” into a playground of ideas where children aged 7–12 with disabilities or from disadvantaged families explore what it means to shape the future. Over ten workshops, each centred on a real-world profession—architect, urban gardener, storyteller—children experiment through storytelling, role play, building models, and solving problems together. Co-designed with the Centre for Special Educational Support – City of Ruse, the programme adapts to different learning needs, while the Center for Creative Training introduces digital creativity and multimedia tools. With the Ruse Regional Department of Education ensuring school outreach, the library becomes a lively hub where imagination, teamwork, and confidence take root.

What’s Next?

Future Builders Lab will reduce isolation and raise self-esteem among vulnerable children by providing inspiring, peer-based learning in a non-school setting. Participants will build friendships, discover personal strengths, and develop creativity, communication, and teamwork. Families gain reassurance from seeing their children thrive, while educators and librarians acquire skills and confidence in inclusive practice. The library itself will evolve into a recognized hub for informal education, accessible to all children regardless of background or ability. By linking play, inclusion, and career discovery, the initiative nurtures agency and broadens horizons, helping young people in Ruse imagine—and begin to build—better futures.
