LetteralMente. Information Literacy and Books to Counter Fake News

How to address misinformation and fake news among students?

The Local Challenge

The specialist Gobetti Centre library and the Maria Mazzarello Secondary School library are working together to develop the use of historical and contemporary sources, to address misinformation and fake news. The students of the school are supported by the centre in their learning of critical thinking and inspiring interest in active citizenship. The students and the staff are transforming the two libraries into open cultural places for information literacy, education and orientation, library diversity and cultural pluralism.

 The Initiative

LetteralMente is offering workshops and co-designed activities for the school’s students, their peers and families at both libraries. They are covering topics such as book heritage on history, philosophy, human sciences and law, book management, disciplinary research and are making suggestions about the revision of new books for the school and the design of implementation into a school civic programme. A final celebratory event designed by the students is being planned at the school, to encourage the continuation of their activities and learning on contemporary issues.

What’s Next?

The event is open both to the school and local Turin residents, with the idea of opening up the topic and library spaces to more people. The Gobetti Centre library plans to initiate a transformation in the community’s perception. It hopes to become a more open specialist library with a selection of books that are easier to consult, while improving communication with communities that do not currently use the library.
