Library Littles Without Walls: Cultural Play for Connection

The Local Challenge

In Barton and Tredworth, one of the most culturally diverse wards in the South West, many families face barriers to accessing early years services. Although Gloucester Library is relatively nearby, the cost and effort of travel with young children, pushchairs, or multiple responsibilities can be a real obstacle. Language, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with formal institutions further discourage participation. With over 70 languages spoken locally and more than 40% of residents from racially minoritised backgrounds, this diversity is often not reflected in existing early years provision. As a result, families miss out on opportunities that support children’s development, confidence, and sense of belonging from the start.

The Initiative

This initiative brings playful, culturally relevant early years sessions into trusted community venues. Sessions are designed for children aged 2–4 and their families, and are co-created with parents and carers to reflect their languages, traditions, and everyday experiences. Each session includes storytelling, singing, music, and sensory play, with space for families to bring in their own songs, games, or cultural practices. For example, families might share lullabies, traditional stories, or simple play activities from their backgrounds, which are then woven into the sessions. Together, this partnership creates fun, culturally relevant play sessions that support children’s development, strengthen parents’ confidence, and make libraries more open and welcoming to diverse families.

What’s Next?

The project aims to build stronger early learning foundations, family confidence, and connections to public services. Children aged 2–4 benefit from fun, culturally rich activities that support communication and wellbeing, while parents and carers find welcoming spaces that reflect their identities and reduce isolation. Hosting sessions in community venues lowers barriers to participation and builds trust, while encouraging families to see the library as a more open, inclusive space. Over time, families will be encouraged to explore Gloucester Library, and library users will be introduced to opportunities at the Friendship Café, creating a two-way bridge. The pilot will also test a model for expanding Library Littles Without Walls across Gloucestershire, supporting long-term community ties and greater inclusion in early years services.
