‘Madaniya, Huriya wa Salama’ – Civil Rule, Freedom & Peace: Seeds of democracy from the Sudanese Revolution

The Local Challenge

Life in refugee camps often means boredom, frustration, and a sense of powerlessness. With little agency, weak community ties, and few creative outlets, residents struggle to find meaningful ways to spend their time—conditions that can trigger mental health crises and deepen isolation. Around Athens, nearly 7,000 people live in remote camps visited by ECHO Mobile Library, often described by residents as prison-like and marked by poor services. Limited transport prevents access to the city’s opportunities, while bureaucratic restrictions hinder solidarity groups from entering. Beyond the camps, migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees face damaging stereotypes across Europe, reinforced by a Eurocentric mindset that undermines empathy, inclusion, and genuine social participation.

The Initiative

Madaniya, Huriya wa Salama is a collaboration between the Sudanese community in Athens and the library to share the story of Sudan’s 2019–21 democratic revolution. Together, they publish a slim volume of activist testimonies, collaboratively edited and translated into Greek, English, Arabic, French, Turkish, and Dari. The initiative also produces a short podcast series with Sudanese voices, expands the library’s collection with Sudanese literature and history, and develops free educational resources for secondary schools. Through books, audio, and classroom tools, the project makes rarely heard experiences accessible, challenges stereotypes, and strengthens intercultural dialogue across communities.

What’s Next?

Stories of Sudan’s democratic revolution will spark recognition, dialogue, and inspiration across refugee camps and local communities. By centering first-hand voices, shared in multiple languages, the project will nurture mutual understanding and encourage other groups to tell their own stories. These narratives will challenge Eurocentric assumptions by elevating non-Western knowledge and experiences. At the same time, they will provide a foundation for media literacy and critical thinking, empowering people of all ages to engage more confidently with society.
