Why Libraries?

Libraries are much more than places to borrow books.

Across Europe, around 67,000 public libraries welcome 757 million visits and serve 75 million registered users every year. They are trusted community spaces where people learn, create, connect, and access culture.

According to the new EU report Strengthening Europe through Public Libraries, libraries are helping communities tackle some of today’s biggest social challenges.

Libraries are helping Europe:

📚 Promote lifelong learning and skills development

🎭 Increase access to culture and support creative ecosystems

🤝 Build stronger, more connected communities

💻 Bridge the digital divide

🗳️ Strengthen democracy and civic participation

💼 Support employment, entrepreneurship, and economic development

🌱 Encourage environmental sustainability

❤️ Improve health and wellbeing

🏘️ Contribute to urban and rural development

🚨 Build community resilience in times of crisis
