nice here, with #…

The Local Challenge

Utrecht is a rapidly growing city grappling with urgent social challenges: inequality, housing shortages, and limited opportunities for civic participation. Many residents, especially marginalized groups, feel disconnected from decision-making and from one another. Despite Utrecht’s strong tradition of citizen-led initiatives and its political commitment to inclusivity, polarisation is increasing, and not all voices are equally heard. Without new, accessible ways to connect people and bridge divides, social cohesion and community resilience remain at risk.

The Initiative

“nice here, with #…” is a monthly event series which convenes residents, city-makers, and decision-makers to explore pressing urban themes, ranging from housing and urban greenery to community building and placemaking.

Sessions combine informal and structured elements: a shared meal provided by a local sustainable caterer, followed by icebreakers, short talks from local experts or stakeholders, and facilitated workshops. The format of this initiative emphasizes dialogue, exchange of knowledge, and the translation of ideas into practical next steps. The partnership with the library provides an accessible, civic-minded venue and ensures broad outreach, while the community group contributes expertise in participatory design and community engagement.

What’s Next?

The initiative plans to expand its reach and deepen inclusion. Upcoming editions will be co-created with groups that are often underrepresented in civic life, such as migrants, LGBTQIA+ residents, seniors, and low-income communities, ensuring their perspectives are integrated. Measures such as free entry, healthy communal meals, accessible venues, and bilingual programming are intended to reduce barriers to participation.

A volunteer group will be established to sustain momentum and broaden collaboration with municipal institutions and local organizations. Looking ahead, the model has the potential to be replicated in other neighborhoods, offering a scalable approach to fostering dialogue, connection, and grassroots action.
