North Paddington Nature Pilgrimage

The Local Challenge

North Paddington is one of the most deprived and densely populated parts of the UK, where families often live in flats with little or no access to green space. Children growing up here face stark health inequalities: one in two leave primary school overweight, and one in six experience poor mental health. Poverty and lack of access to nature exacerbate these issues, reducing life expectancy by up to 18 years compared to wealthier areas of Westminster. At the same time, climate change and environmental challenges feel remote when daily pressures such as housing and the cost of living take precedence.

The Initiative

This initiative is a circular, fully accessible 6km walking route inspired by European Camino trails. Families, children, and residents can complete it in one go or in stages, collecting stamps in a Nature Pilgrim Passport at ten key sites along the route. At six points of historical or environmental importance, new markers of significance will be installed, each designed to highlight ways to support local wildlife and biodiversity. These markers will be created through junior makers’ workshops held at local libraries, where children learn new skills, take home their own creations, and contribute to the trail. QR codes at each stopping point link to reliable information about local history and ecology. The trail connects Paddington, Maida Vale, and Queen’s Park libraries, with stamps available at community venues, shops, and places of worship. A community competition also invites children to design the Finishers’ Stamp, embedding ownership and creativity into the project.

What’s Next?

The pilgrimage will encourage children and families to explore their neighbourhoods, improve physical and mental health, and form a deeper connection to local biodiversity. In the short term, participants will enjoy active outdoor experiences, learn through making, and meet other “Nature Pilgrims.” Longer term, the project aims to build community cohesion, instil pride in local spaces, and encourage small, practical actions for the environment, from litter picking to planting for pollinators. Libraries will act as hubs of environmental learning and community empowerment, linking residents to wider climate initiatives. Over time, the route will become a lasting local asset – an accessible, family-friendly Camino that celebrates community spirit, urban nature, and the role of libraries in tackling inequality through creativity and connection.
