Queer Pages, Eastern Voices

The Local Challenge

Across Eastern Europe, queer literature remains vulnerable to censorship, exclusion, and neglect, with many authors facing limited opportunities to publish or share their work. In Moldova, these challenges are compounded by the growing use of LGBTQI+ narratives in political debates, particularly in the lead-up to the 2025 elections. This context creates a fragile environment in which queer voices risk being overlooked or erased at a time when community representation and dialogue are most needed. Preserving and making this literature accessible is therefore vital, both as part of cultural heritage and as a resource for resilience, memory, and solidarity.

The Initiative

The initiative responds by curating a dedicated collection of queer literature from Eastern Europe in a community library, focusing especially on Russian-language works by post-Soviet and exiled authors. These books, often inaccessible elsewhere, are sourced through collaboration with publishers, NGOs, and authors in exile. Alongside the collection, the Rainbow Shards Book Club engages the community through readings, discussions, and author talks, inviting members to help identify works, host reading circles, and co-curate the archive. By combining preservation with participation, the project builds a living archive that safeguards endangered voices while creating space for dialogue, reflection, and collective empowerment. The library becomes both a refuge and a platform, linking local readers to regional struggles and affirming queer culture as part of Moldova’s civic life.

What’s Next?

The initiative hopes to strengthen belonging and visibility for local queer people, women, youth, and refugees by giving them access to stories that reflect their own realities. Through the library and book club, marginalised groups find a safe, inclusive space to read, connect, and share experiences, while the wider community gains opportunities to encounter narratives that challenge stigma and erasure. Over time, the initiative positions the community library as a cultural hub and living archive – one that resists repression and nurtures solidarity.
