Resonance: Music Appreciation for the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Local Challenge
Music education and library services in Greece remain largely inaccessible to D/deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. In the absence of inclusive design and Deaf-centered approaches, music is often positioned as an art form they cannot fully experience, resulting in exclusion from cultural participation and learning opportunities. This gap reflects broader national challenges: low participation rates of people with disabilities in cultural life and a lack of targeted initiatives to address accessibility. For the Music Library of Greece, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity: to reimagine how music can be accessed, appreciated, and shared in ways that respect and reflect diverse sensory and cultural perspectives.
The Initiative
The project pilots a multisensory music education methodology, placing Deaf culture and accessibility at its center. Through a series of workshops, D/deaf participants explore music using visual, tactile, and vibrational methods, transforming sound into a shared, inclusive experience. The program includes staff training in Deaf awareness, accessible communication channels such as Greek Sign Language and subtitles, and the co-creation of educational modules that draw on the Library’s resources and the lived experience of D/deaf individuals. Inclusive public sessions invite direct participation, while staff seminars build institutional knowledge.
What’s Next?
For participants, the project reframes music as a language they can access and reinterpret, fostering agency and cultural contribution rather than passive exclusion. For the Library, it marks a shift from temporary accessibility measures to embedding inclusion as a core practice, strengthening its role as a civic hub and setting a precedent for cultural institutions nationally. Evaluation combines attendance data with participant feedback in multiple formats—text, video, or sign language—to reflect diverse communication needs. Success will be measured through participant engagement, staff learning, and the dissemination of the toolkit. Over time, the initiative is designed to serve as a model for sustainable, community-led inclusion, positioning the Library as a leader in expanding cultural rights and reimagining sound-based culture through Deaf-centered approaches.
