Fighting Isolation: The Story of a Library in Busto, Spain
With no shops, limited public transport, and closed public spaces in the villages, Busto’s ageing population is more isolated than ever, and youngsters are leaving the area at a rapid rate in search of better opportunities. A collaboration between the library and volunteers from the community, this Challenge team deepened the community spirit by creating a safe space for the local community in this remote part of Spain. Their work resulted in the local municipality ‘donating’ the old school house to permanently house the library.
As part of The Europe Challenge, this initiative from the 2023 programme edition tackled the common issues faced by many remote and rural areas across Europe.
