Forthcoming OMC report: Strengthening Europe Through Public Libraries
Libraries are part of everyday experience of millions of people living in Europe. The European network of libraries deserves recognition as our critical social infrastructure.
An OMC (Open Method of Coordination) Group of 32 library experts was set up by the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Council of the European Union under the EU Work Plan for Culture Plan 2023-2026. The group is set to publish the report Strengthening Europe Through Public Libraries soon, which outlines the current challenges and opportunities for public libraries in Europe in fulfilling their various roles.
The seven key roles libraries play in their communities — Community Builder, Storyteller, Guide, Facilitator, Protector, Catalyst, and Motivator — are brought to life through seven initiatives participating in The Europe Challenge 2025/26.
