Romnja Feminist Library

Empowering Roma women to challenge discrimination through sharing their stories and showcasing Romani writing.

The Local Challenge

The Romanja Feminist Library is a global platform for Roma Feminism. It offers a curated collection of resources and an online magazine for Romani women and girls to publish their work. The challenge is to address gaps in accessing Roma feminist knowledge and to decolonise the dominant system that perpetuates structural and systemic discrimination and violence towards Roma the biggest minority in Europe. To tackle rising xenophobia, sexism and racism across Europe, it is an urgent challenge to create a space for Roma women and girls to produce knowledge based on their own perspectives and experiences.

 The Initiative

The Romanja Feminist Library initiative is creating a space for Roma women and girls who want to make their voices heard. By establishing an online Romanja Magazine, they are amplifying the perspectives and experiences of Roma women and girls across Europe. They are growing a community of authors and creators with experience in writing and publishing to help guide and mentor younger Roma women, with the aim of creating spaces of sisterhood and producing new knowledge that empowers Roma women and girls with intersectional identities.

What’s Next?

The initiative aims to engage mainstream audiences, forge partnerships with supportive stakeholders, and enhance knowledge on archiving and libraries. It aims to shift the narrative surrounding Roma women from subjects to knowledge producers by creating a space for Roma women’s critical voices, providing role models and increasing visibility by creating a community of Roma women across Europe.
