SCENES OF CHANGE. An Artistic Laboratory for the Library of the Prison to Reflect on Citizenship

The Local Challenge

Inside the Albolote Penitentiary Centre, many inmates are grappling with fractured identities, low self-esteem, and a deep disconnection from civil society. For many, life before prison was shaped by exclusion, limited education, and few opportunities. Life inside often brings further isolation, reinforcing social stigma and making the prospect of reintegration daunting. What is missing are spaces that allow them to rebuild confidence, rediscover their voice, and see themselves as active participants in the world beyond the prison walls. In this context, the prison library run by volunteers holds untapped potential as a cultural and creative hub.

The Initiative

Scenes of Change transforms the prison library into an artistic laboratory, where literature becomes a springboard for live artistic expression. Professional artists from the community work side by side with inmates, guiding them through performance techniques in theatre, dance, music, and performance art. Selected literary texts encourage reflection and discussions on themes such as identity, diversity, ecology, respect, and civic responsibility. The programme includes a reading club, a film forum, and a series of creative workshops leading to the production of individual and collective performances. These are shared in exhibitions – both physical and virtual – that give participants the chance to present their work to fellow inmates, prison staff, and outside audiences.

What’s Next?

When the performances end, the skills, confidence, and self-awareness developed in the lab remain. Inmates leave with tools for expression, reflection, and collaboration: assets they can carry into life after prison. The project also creates lasting pathways between the prison and the wider community – visiting artists maintain links, staff and educators build on the methods learned, and the library continues to host creative programmes. By embedding Pages on Stage into the prison’s cultural offering, the library becomes a recognised space for personal development and dialogue, helping to dismantle stigma and strengthen the bridges needed for genuine social reintegration.
