Soft Spaces, Strong Bonds
The Local Challenge
In the early years of raising a child, many new parents in Jūrmala, as well as across Europe, find themselves feeling unexpectedly isolated. As families become more mobile and traditional support systems grow weaker, opportunities for everyday social connection can become scarce. This quiet separation can affect confidence, well-being, and mental health. Luckily, public libraries, with their open doors and strong community ties, are ideally placed to fill this gap. They offer safe, welcoming spaces where parents can meet, share experiences, and build a sense of belonging. Soft Spaces, Strong Bonds seeks to build on this role, strengthening libraries as vital hubs of connection and support.
The Initiative
Soft Spaces, Strong Bonds offers new parents a warm, welcoming place to unwind, connect, or simply be among others. Twice-monthly meetups at the library create a low-pressure space for conversation and shared time with infants. Throughout the year, additional sessions with local experts, including babywearing consultants and early childhood specialists, offer practical support in a relaxed setting. In partnership with NGO Jūrmala Woman, the project ensures a parent-led, inclusive approach, while collaboration with health and social services helps reach isolated families.
What’s Next?
The project will continue to grow its impact by encouraging everyday connections among parents and building a stronger sense of community in Jūrmala. As trust and relationships develop, support networks are expected to extend beyond the library sessions themselves. For Jūrmala Central Library, this marks a meaningful step toward becoming more than a place for traditional services — evolving into a space where families feel seen, supported, and welcomed. By offering low-barrier, real-life support during the early stages of parenthood, the library is laying the groundwork for long-term community care and emotional resilience.
