The Elections Experience Trail

Developing an interactive experience in the library to educate students about democracy, elections and active citizenship.

The Local Challenge

In Belgium, schoolchildren receive education on the election process, state structure and the principles of democracy in the third year of secondary school, when they are 14-15 years old. Muntpunt is working in parallel with the educational system, by offering students an experience that immerses them in democratic principles. They want to assist teachers in the challenging task of encouraging young people to participate in the political debate, outside the four walls of the classroom.

 The Initiative

In 2024, many young people are voting for the first time, which raises questions about how to vote, which party to choose and even the value of voting. Trust in political and other institutions is declining, especially among young people. However, when looking at non-conventional participation, there are many forms of social engagement. It is clear that young people are concerned about political issues, such as climate change, war and discrimination. This election initiative encourages young people to participate actively in the democratic process and provides guidance on how to make sure their interests and concerns are included on the political agenda.

What’s Next?

The learning package can be loaned out to other organisations such as libraries and youth centres to reach more young people. Tisaanu, the community group, consists mainly of secondary schools in the Brussels Capital Region (meaning the students and the teachers are the main beneficiaries). However, by  extension, there is potential for broader sharing of the experience through other libraries and organisations, where young adults are regular visitors. The project partners also plan to create a platform for participation and sharing so that Muntpunt and the local government can learn directly from the students’ input.
